KASAM - A presentation
Presentation folder Sept 2007

The Swedish National Council for Nuclear Waste - established in 1985 - is an independent committee attached to the Ministry for the Environment. The Council’s mandate is to study issues relating to nuclear waste and the decommissioning of nuclear installations and to advise the Government and certain authorities on these issues. The Government has authorised the Minister for the Ministry of Environment appoint the Chairman and up to ten other Members.

The members are independent experts within different areas of importance for the disposal of radioactive waste, not only within technology and science  but also within areas such as ethics, psychology, law and social sciences.

According to its terms of reference (Dir. 1992:72), The Counil´s shall:

bullet

present a report on the state of knowledge in the nuclear waste area every third year. Such reports have been presented - in Swedish only - in 1986, 1987, 1989, 1992 and 1995. The two latest reports were issued in 2001 and 2004 and are available also in English;

bullet

present an independent review of the research and development programme for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel which the nuclear power utilities prepare once every three years. The latest reviews were issued in 2002 and  2005 and are available also in English;

bulletact as an advisory committee – upon request – to the authorities within the nuclear waste field (the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, SKI, and the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority, SSI) on matters connected with nuclear waste and the decommissioning of nuclear power plants.

Besides some technical seminars, KASAM also arranges seminars with the aim of opening up a dialogue between different interest groups which are seriously interested in nuclear waste-related issues.

Strategy Plan for the Council
